Variable Stars: Cataclysmic, Accretion Disks, He I Emission

We undertook a non-LTE radiative transfer calculation to determine the helium I line strengths from accretion disks of cataclysmic variable stars. Until very recently the helium I line strengths seemed puzzling because it was believed that these accretian disks were too cool to excite this emission. It is now generally accepted that the helium I emissions come from hot "chromospheres" at the top and bottom of the disk. The results obtained show that the helium I emission lines can come from these chromospheres. The results show that the helium lines are indeed potentially the best probes of the temperature and density in these chromospheres.
