Gravitational production of energy density in the case of a minimally coupled scalar field is treated using quantum field theory in curved spacetime. We calculate 0> of the produced particles. The results for the massless case can be applied to gravitons, but an unphysically large contribution is found from wavelengths longer than the horizon size. Gravitons of wavelengths smaller that the horizon give rise to energy density ϱgrav~H4 (H being the Hubble constant during inflation). In the case of a light scalar of mass m≪H the long wavelengths contribute ϱm~H5/m, which too can become unphysically large for sufficiently small m. We also discuss how this energy density subsequently evolves.
