The nature of conjugate signatures of a number of impulsive magnetic field variations registered on the earth's surface at near-cusp dayside latitudes is investigated using magnetic field data from magnetometers and the asociated data-collection systems at the South Pole Station (Antarctica) and at Iqaluit (Northwest Territories, Canada). Data from the July-November 1985 interval disclosed presence of many such magnetic impulse events which could be interpreted in terms of intense field-aligned currents above the observing stations. These observations are discussed in the context of contemporary theories on the generation of ionospheric disturbances by such magnetopause processes as sporadic reconnection ('flux transfer events'), plasma injections into the low-latitude boundary layer, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, and solar wind 'pressure pulses'.
