The plasticity characteristics of single crystals of MgSiO3 perovskite, grown from the melt were investigated by means of microhardness tests using a Vickers indenter and, in some cases, a Knoop indenter on a polished surface. The results were compared with data obtained on two titanate perovskites, SrTiO3 and CaTiO3. The Vickers hardness, H(V), of MgSiO3 perovskite was determined to be 18 + or - 2 GPa. This is about a factor or two larger than the H(V) of enstatite or olivine, indicating a significantly higher resistance to plastic flow of MgSiO3, which constitutes 70 to 100 percent of the lower mantle, than of the upper mantle minerals. The normalized hardness, H(V)/shear modulus (mu), of MgSiO3 perovskite was found to be close to the H(V)/mu values exhibited by the two titanate perovskites.
