Noctilucent cloud (NLC) is a rather infrequent but well-recognized phenomenon of the upper atmosphere most readily observed during the long summer twilight of high latitudes. The current consensus of opinion is that such clouds are formed by the condensation of ice crystals on meteoric dust at the mesopause and that these subsequently become visible when critically illuminated by the sun during twilight. In Scotland, NLCs are reported sporadically from the middle of May to the beginning of August, most frequently in late June and early July. Although the incidence of such displays is well-documented in annual reports from the Meteorology Department, University of Edinburgh, detailed descriptions of individual events are rare. This account, which is based on a series of timed photographic observations, presents a general description and detailed analysis of the outstanding display of 18-19 June 1976.
