The authors have tested the free-free emission mechanism explanation for
the big blue bump in AGNs and found: 1. The free-free explanation is
consistent with the observed variability in UV only when the gas is
highly clumpy and deviated from spherical geometry. 2. There is no
intrinsic free-free spectrum in AGNs.
