In the approach proposed, the powered phases of a transfer trajectory are approximated by points at which the magnitude of the velocity vector changes instantaneously under the action of an impulse which, in its turn, approximates the action of the thrust during a powered phase. In addition to simplifying the problem, this approach makes it possible to reduce the determination of the optimal transfer trajectory to the minimization of a function of many variables. A solution thus obtained provides good estimates of the fuel consumption.
