Recent observation suggest that low-altitude plasmasphere electrons are produced in a spatially limited region. This paper examines the observable signatures that are expected to characterize a localized source, including both the morphology of precipitation and the effect on the pitch angle distribution in the drift loss cone. These predictions are based on a simplified model which invokes a delta function to describe the spatial localization of the source. The two cases of a source localized in longitude and a source localized in local time are considered. The predictions of these models are compared with some observations of the pitch angle distributions of 29-keV and 59-keV electrons at midlatitudes.
