We have performed H I absorption measurements toward eight compact galactic plane variable radio sources. These variable sources were among 59 discovered by the galactic radio patrol survey of Gregory & Taylor (1986) (GT). While some of the GT sources have been identified with active binary star systems, most lack a positive identification and consequently are of unknown origin. Our H I observations place all eight sources at the edge of or beyond our galaxy, and we suggest that, with a few very interesting exceptions, the GT sources are likely to be quasars, radio galaxies, and BL Lac objects.
