In this paper the physical problems of long term variability of solar activity are treated. The review deals with the observations of a quasi periodic variability of solar activity and its effects in the heliosphere with periods of about eleven, twenty two, ninety (Gleissberg cycle) years and longer (hundreds years). A twenty two year period is considered to be the principal one. Basic theoretical assumptions concerning the nature of the solar cycle are also reviewed. Special attention is given to the question of the relation between ``order and chaos'' in the solar activity dynamics. In this connection the problems of long term predictability of solar activity and its dynamo-mechanism are briefly discussed.
