Scientific paper

The basic features of the three axis vector magnetometer used on HELIOS space probes for the E2 experiment are described with emphasis on the sensor and electronic system. The experiment includes not only continuously observing the interplanetary magnetic field, but also measuring its spiral structure and discontinuous appearance. The analog-digital conversion of the measured voltages, the flipper, the time average computer, the shock identification computer, and data processing techniques are discussed.
