Observations from the Maunder Minimum, including carbon-14 abundances in tree rings and contemporary reports of solar eclipses and auroral activity, are examined in the context of present knowledge of coronal dynamics and solar wind energetics. The carbon-14 abundances for the period indicate an enhanced cosmic ray activity, suggesting that the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) was smooth and perhaps of low intensity. The apparent absence of a corona during eclipses and corresponding low coronal density suggest an absence of closed magnetic loops, and the absence of mid-latitude aurorae indicates that the solar wind speed and/or IMF intensity were low and irregular. A low large-scale photospheric field intensity is implied by the absence of sunspots. These results are consistent with a solar wind of the type described in 'quiet solar wind' models, but with somewhat reduced mass and energy fluxes; the solar wind speed and density at 1 a.u. were probably less than 300 km/sec and 5 cu cm, respectively. The terrestrial response to the minimum solar wind is examined.
