An experimental investigation of cosmic-ray hadrons at an atmospheric depth of 990 g/sq cm is reported. Both energy and velocity of incident hadrons are studied with a view to assess hadron masses, apparently a unique feature among ground-level experiments. The experimental apparatus uses a shallow calorimeter to determine incident energy and a large atmospheric-pressure Cerenkov counter to provide velocity information. The results include the measurement of the charged-hadron energy spectrum, the upper limit on the pi/p ratio, and the upper limit on the flux of massive particles.
