The radioactive heating of spherical bodies is discussed and it is shown that it is possible to investigate the melting of asteroids quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The mathematical solution of the problem embodies a parameter which makes it relatively easy to take into account both the effect of varying size and of conductivity. A number of different models are considered, which allow for both a cold and a hot origin and for different concentrations of radioactivity. The results are compared with the data available from studies of meteorites and a number of general conclusions are drawn.
