A recent paper by Hart and Davis [1] has contributed to the problem concerning the MgO and Ni contents of magmas which are regarded as parental to major tholeiitic suites. They confirm that KD Niol-liq is a function of MgO content of the magma and claim that, with their derived KD values, the straight-line and curved portions of MgO vs. Ni trends for tholeiitic suites cannot be explained by fractional crystallization of olivine from a picritic magma. Thus, they believe the parental liquids to lie in the range of MgO = 6-13%. We contend that the arguments they present are unconvincing, if not misleading, and instead prefer to believe the weight of evidence suggesting that primary magmas from the mantle are picritic, and that these are the parents to most tholeiitic provinces.
