Atomic Clocks: Universal Time

Scientific paper

Since 1971, atomic clocks have supplied the official world time references in the form of international atomic time (IAT) and the co-ordinated universal time (UT). These scales are used as a basis for the co-ordinated distribution of time and frequencies. However these are paper scales that appear only as corrections to timescales generated by national clocks or by systems such as GPS and GLONASS. In many cases, these clocks and systems are synchronised with the IAT or the UT to within one microsecond. Also, standard frequencies are broadcast by radio with a relative accuracy of up to 5×10-13. Hence it is fairly easy to obtain the time and frequencies to these levels of precision. Of course one needs to know where to go. Here, the authors indicate what users must do, and how they can get even better accuracy.
