Some basic concepts which are essential in the understanding of global
energy regulation in the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system are
introduced. The importance of a line-tying concept is particularly
emphasized in connection with the solar wind entry, energy release in
the magnetosphere and energy dissipation in the ionosphere.
