The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), which will be flown on a future Shuttle flight will provide views of the sun never before available and a better understanding of the sun. The base support of the telescope is a 3.8 m diameter, 7.3 m cylinder containing an Articulated Primary Motor (APM). The APM will focus the 1.5 m aperture, f/3.6 Gregorian optical system. The normal instrument operating temperature of just under 20 C will be controlled by active and passive systems. The telescope will use a variety of imaging and spectroscopic focal plane instruments. A baseline set for the first flight includes a Tunable Filter System (TFS), an Ultraviolet/Visible Spectrograph (UVS), and a Photometric Filtergraph (PF). The TFS will produce images with a spectral resolution of 0.004 to 0.0125 nm and spatial resolution will be 0.1 arcsec in a field of view of 100 arcsec. Spectra detected by CCD arrays will be produced by the interchangeable gratings of the UVS. The PF is a camera with a spectral range of 160 to 600 nm.
