The electrodynamic model of coronas is examined as the essential link connecting X-ray observations to the basic mechanical properties of, for example, a star. Probably the most significant breakthroughs in understanding the heating of coronas have emerged from a global electrodynamics approach. Although this approach ties together a.c. (resonant) and d.c. (non-resonant) heating mechanisms, the detailed physics of the dissipation process is still not clearly understood.
