High-dispersion optical velocities for χ Cyg obtained during the interval of 1959 to 1979 are presented. Particularly important are data for 1977, when Fourier transform spectra were obtained by Hinkle, Hall, and Ridgeway (1982) and for the faint maximum of 1966, when an unusual emission spectrum similar to that of R Cyg at faint maxima was found. An analysis of the velocities of the various observed layers under the constraint that the temperature must decrease outward (except at a shock front where emission is produced by a thin hot layer) produces a consistent kinematic model with a shock first seen near phase 0.9 and disappearing by phase 0.6. The emission spectrum of 1966 showed lines seen previously only during faint maxima of R Cyg. As in R Cyg, the emission lines during a faint maximum show a very small velocity of expansion which the author attributes to enhanced limb brightening.
