The author presents radial-velocity data during four maxima of U Ori between 1973 and 1983, including the unprecedented bright maximum of 1973 and the rather faint maxima of 1977 and 1983. During the bright maximum of 1973 the emission lines were surprisingly strong. The circumstellar expansion velocity seems to have increased between 1977 and 1981. The source of the 1973 emission spectrum is discussed with the conclusion that it probably comes from a region of larger volume than usual, excited by radiation from a shock below it.
