A generalized model is presented which describes the radiative transport of O II multiplet radiation in the daytime ionosphere. The model allows for vertical separation between the O(+) multiple scattering layer and the region of production of photons by ionization-excitation of atomic oxygen. Details of the model are illustrated with volume excitation rates and intensities. It is concluded that the generalized model is required in order to obtain reliable information about the ionospheric O(+) from 834 A observations.
