Nitrogen atoms are a minor species of the earth's thermosphere in terms of abundance. Their role in ionospheric neutral and ion chemistry is large, however, and the excited states are highly involved in airglow and auroral optical emissions. In this paper the authors explore in detail the production mechanisms and production rates of N(2P), N(2D), and N(4S) states of atomic nitrogen in aurora.
