Palaeomagnetic data relating to secular variation, westward drift,
non-dipole field scatter, field intensities and polarity transitions are
considered together in an attempt to improve our understanding of the
geodynamo. An attempt is then made to interpret these data in the light
of magnetohydrodynamic theory.
