An effort is made to study variations of the tau-decay of the ring current at various geomagnetic-storm phases, and to determine the effectiveness of certain functions describing the injection of energy into the DR current. It is shown that the time constant of the ring-current decay during the main storm phase does not depend on its intensity, and is equal to 4 + or - 2 hours. During the recovery phase the decay constant increases as the intensity of the DR current increases. An algorithm is developed for calculating mean hourly values of the Dst index from solar-wind parameters.
