The generation of MHD waveguide oscillations in the F2-layer by alternating currents flowing above and below the earth surface is studied theoretically. Attention is given to LF sources which lead to the generation of quasi-steady fields oscillating at a frequency of about 1 Hz. A numerical method is presented which makes it possible to relate the source parameters with the amplitude of the generated signal for specific models of the ionosphere. It is concluded that shock waves emanating from earthquakes can generate waveguide signals in the ionosphere that have properties similar to those of geomagnetic disturbances from electromagnetic sources.
