The theoretical significance of Dirac and GUT monopoles is reviewed and a brief description is given of the various experimental techniques that previously have been employed for their detection. The basics of high energy cosmic ray showers are discussed. The acceleration of monopoles in large-scale magnetic fields and their expected kinetic energies is examined. The monopole-matter stopping power is derived with the inclusion of processes not previously documented in the literature. In addition to ionizational energy loss this work includes electron pair production, monopole bremsstrahlung, and the hadronic interaction in the form of monopole-quark scattering. Relativistic monopoles are shown to penetrate the earth and those with lower mass would offer a means to study the earth's interior. The monopole shower profile is derived and shown to be distinct from the shower profiles of ordinary cosmic ray events. The outlook for the detection of relativistic monopoles in current and future cosmic ray experiments is examined.
