The photospheres and winds of Luminous Blue Variable stars (LBVs) are investigated using non-LTE unified model atmospheres. The key question addressed is whether increases in the mass-loss rate of LBV stars can account for the observed increases in stellar radii by factors 4 to 12. A high mass-loss might lead to the formation of so-called "pseudo photospheres", mimicing large radii. Several arguments, both observational and theoretical, are presented. They show that a variable mass-loss is not the cause of the observed radius changes. It is concluded that the mechanism responsible should act in sub-photospheric layers.
