A new probe is proposed to prevent spacecraft with conductive surfaces which are immersed in energetic plasma environments, from reaching highly negative potentials in case of insufficient photoelectron emission. This probe works on the principle of electron field emission; it is cheap, small in size, light in weight and it uses no power. Information about density and temperature of the surrounding plasma can even be obtained at the cost of very little additional hardware. It is recommended to mount this probe on spacecraft which are venturing in planetary magnetospheres, as a guarantee against failures of subsystems and experimental equipment caused by very negative surface potentials.
