There are three classes of stray-light problems that will affect the performance of the Large Space Telescope: (1) scatter from the primary optics, (2) specular and diffuse reflections from telescope walls, and (3) diffraction effects from various edges in the optical path. For each of these, BRDF's (bidirectional reflectance distribution functions) can be analyzed so that total-system stray-light-control performance can be evaluated. The BRDF can be typically defined in terms of the radiance in the focal plane produced by a source of radiance. The concept of the BRDF as a useful figure of merit function for analyzing telescope stray-light performance is described. Simple mirror-surface models are analyzed.
