Investigations of large protonated clusters under thermal conditions in the laboratory reveal findings that can be related to noctilucent clouds (NLC) that are observed around the mesopause during summer nights at high latitudes. The laboratory cluster bimodal distribution is similar to that observed in situ during NLC displays. The bimodal cluster distribution is consistent with predictions based on ion-induced nucleation theory.
