The behavior of populations of the levels 1S and 1D of neutral oxygen,
forbidden O I, at ionospheric heights when microbursts of electron
fluxes impulsively excite the excitation mechanism is considered. The
possibility that microbursts of electron fluxes can manifest themselves
in the form of optical flashes at 557.7 and 630.0 nm is discussed.
