The linear filtering technique is applied to model the magnetospheric response through high time resolution ISEE 3 solar wind data and geomagnetic indices, in particular AL, AU, and Dst. The computed impulse response function exhibits a specific low pass filter characteristic which indicates that the magnetosphere cannot follow fast fluctuations. The time delay of the magnetospheric response depends greatly on the strength of the energy input. The findings of the single channel analysis with the results of the more sensitive technique of multichannel filtering are compared to shed light on the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. The most predictable geomagnetic index is the ring current index Dst, where over 70 percent of the Dst distances can be predicted by using VBs and pV exp 2 as input signals.
