The physical processes involved on solar wind magnetosphere coupling are rather complex and not possible to describe adequately by means of single point measurements. Even in the case of multiple spacecraft mission: like Cluster, future investigations will have to rely on the full spectrum of available observations, including found based measurements in the cusp and cleft region. Some of the unsolved problems on solar wind magnetosphere coupling are identified and the capabilities of using modern dedicated ground based research facilities to obtain 'maps' of highly dynamic ionospheric signatures of magnetosphere boundary layer processes are demonstrated. These 'maps' may provide crucial information about the distribution and motion of the sources of the processes.
