It is a long-standing problem of nuclear physics to explain the nuclear force on fundamental grounds. Upon the initiative of Weinberg, Ordonez, and van Kolck, the past decade has created hope that chiral effective field theory may be the key to the solution. First attempts along this line took chiral perturbation theory to order two or three in small momenta. Even though promising, these models were only of qualitative nature and, therefore, of little use for a microscopic description of the properties of real atomic nuclei. Moreover, it turned out that the pion-exchange contributions at order three are very large, several times the ones at order two, raising serious questions concerning the convergence of the chiral expansion. Recently, there has been dramatic progress addressing all of the above issues. In a heroic effort spearheaded by Kaiser, all two- and three-pion exchange contributions to the NN interaction at order four have been calculated. The new results reveal a clear trend towards convergence of the chiral expansion. Moreover, together with the contact terms (that encode the nuclear short-range force) of the same order, it is possible to describe the NN interaction with the highest precision. As a result, we have finally a NN potential at hand that has a sound fundamenatl basis and is, at the same time, of precise, quantitative nature. This NN interaction sets a new standard for theoretical input appropriate for future few-body calculations and microscopic nuclear many-body theory.
