A method is introduced for deriving the orientation of north in a heliogram with an accompanying reduction of measurements. The method employs the following parameters: (1) the pole distance of the hour angle axis; (2) the hour angle of the sun and the hour axis; (3) and the angles between the declination axis and the optical axis and the hour angle axis of the heliograph; and (4) the declination of the sun, among others. A slow change in the alignment of the heliograph parameters is compensated for with corrections and revisions of the parameters.
