We discuss the relationship between the concentration of matter and the formation of trapped surfaces in initial data for the Einstein equations. We consider momentarily static ellipsoidal initial data and formulate necessary conditions for the existence of trapped surfaces and sufficient conditions for averaged trapped surfaces as well as for trapped surfaces, the latter for a restricted class of initial data. All results are obtained in terms of the total rest mass M and the largest proper radius supL of the ellipsoidal body.
