Hydrogen at high densities is expected to undergo a transition from a
molecular to a metallic state. It is shown here that in a range of
metallic densities hydrogen is likely to possess partial spin
polarization, analogously to iron. It is suggested that this is the
origin of magnetic fields in planets and stars.
