The mechanism involved in the formation of the premidnight region 2 currents is investigated using magnetic field and precipitating particle data collected by the DMSP F7 satellite. Variations in the extent and intensity of the region 2 currents on the nightside in the darkened hemisphere are determined for a small isolated substorm on January 18, 1984, and the variations are related to the characteristics of the altitudinal profile in electron and ion precipitation. It is shown that, during the substorm, the altitudinal difference between the ion and electron equatorward boundaries does not correlate well with the strength of the region-2 current; in fact, in one case the boundary differences were reversed. These observations are consistent with the pressure gradient mechanism of generating region-2 currents.
