Recent multiwavelength solar observations which illustrate the variety of preflare activity are surveyed. Transient events preceding the impulsive phase are considered, and the emergence of magnetic flux and the creation of magnetic shear are examined in the context of magnetic evolution of the sun. Three specific examples of flare-related eruptions are discussed in order to point out mechanisms for destabilization of filaments.
