The theory of the topological conservation of cosmic strings is examined to explain why strings have survived since the big bang. The nature of the topological origin of cosmic strings, string dynamics, and the processes that occur when strings cross are discussed. Consideration is given to string evolution, the large-scale structure and observable effects of strings, and the possible existence of superconducting cosmic strings.
