Geomagnetic Field: Secular Variations
Scientific paper
A mechanism for excitation of the magnetic disturbances causing secular geomagnetic variations with characteristic times of less than 100 years, in particular the 60-year variations, is proposed. These disturbances are concentrated in ropes and loops of magnetic lines generated by the mechanism of a hydromagnetic fluctuation dynamo in the Earth's liquid core. Ropes located in a skin layer about 60 km in thickness near the core-mantle boundary are the source of the observed variations.
