The wind and shock model for quasars is confronted to observations of 3C 273 obtained since late 1983. It is seen that the hypothesis of spherical symmetry used for simplicity in the original model has to be abandoned. Two physical mechanisms that could lead to physical conditions similar to those empirically derived from the model are proposed.
