Optical polarization maps are presented for the M87 jet at 1.0 and 1.4 arcsec resolution from high S/N ratio electronographic data obtained in the U band. The maps are used to examine the behavior of the polarization rate and the magnetic field structure transverse to the jet. This structure is discussed in relation to radio and optical emission from the jet. The results suggest that the magnetic field is wrapped at the surface of a hollow cylinder, whose axis is parallel to the main direction of the jet, just beyond knot A. It is concluded that the Faraday effect can probably be attributed to the thermal plasma of the jet.
