Chandra Proposal Id #02600098

Scientific paper

The soft X-ray emission of many spiral galaxies has been found to be dominated by a handful of individual sources within each galaxy. Many of these sources are sited outside the nuclei of the galaxies in question, and have remarkably high luminosities (well in excess of 10^38 erg/s). We propose a Chandra observation of the NGC 4485/4490 interacting pair of galaxies, which are known to contain at least five of these "super-luminous" X-ray sources, in order to investigate this phenomena using the unprecedented capabilities of the Chandra observatory.
