Cataclysmic variables provide the most accessible view of accretion physics. They are the most numerous accretion powered X-ray sources, and there are thus many relatively bright, nearby examples. Known examples include several bright eclipsing systems that allow a quantitative determination of the accretion geometry. Perhaps most importantly, the accretion discs in cataclysmic variables evolve on accessible timescales: hours to weeks.
Lobster is a planned all-sky X-ray monitor that, for the first time, will have the sensitivity to monitor routinely a large number of cataclysmic variables. The resulting database of long-term X-ray lightcurves will allow us to carry out a number of key experiments in accretion physics, all of which rely on the breaking of ambiguity present in snapshot observations with larger instruments such as Chandra and XMM-Newton.
Of particular interest will be the timing of the progression of heating and cooling waves in the disc during outburst, as this will allow quantitative tests of the disc instability model.
