Based on the hypothesis that the time profile of a type III burst corresponds with the time profile of an electron flux, it is shown that similar time profiles are maintained even if the electron velocity decreases with distance, provided that the time is normalized at the time of maximum flux. Models are described for the dynamics of fast electrons transversing a plasma. Experimentally observed time profiles of type III bursts are compared with theoretical ones, and single profiles are found to follow the similarity law at least from 0.6 to 5 MHz. Further evidence is presented which shows that the similarity is maintained throughout the frequency range of type III bursts. It is concluded that the time profile is caused by the temporal variation of the electron flux due to the initial velocity distribution of the electron beam.
