We review the alternative scenarios of gamma-ray emission during the early GRB phase. A key uncertainty is the Thomson depth of the emitting shell. Whether it is Thomson thick or thin affects not only the emission mechanism, but also the overall energetics and beaming requirements. We argue that the transition time to the afterglow phase in the case of GRB990123 supports the proposal that GRBs are Thomson thick during the gamma-ray phase. We also propose a new approach to model the asymptotic pulse decay profiles. .
