Observations of stars within approximately 20 parsecs are discussed. Certain connections with the Hertzsprung-Russell spectrum-brightness diagram are considered. The 'flare stars' found in conjunction with dwarfs are briefly described, the relationship between age and speed of stars is explained, and the luminosity functions of Luyten and Jahreiss-Wielen are presented.
