Schaefer (1966) has proposed a new principle of active transfer in space, which is based on the fact that the principal vector of the gravitational forces acting on the spacecraft differs from the force that would attract a particle located at the spacecraft's center of mass. By changing the mass geometry of the craft during its orbital motion, it is possible, in principle, to achieve transfer from an elliptical to a hyperbolic orbit. Unfortunately, such a maneuver required spacecraft dimensions in excess of 100 km. It is shown that application of this principle to the more modest problem of damping undesirable vibrations results in much smaller spacecraft dimensiones than those required for orbital transfer.
